The Arkansas Cancer Research Center at

The Cancer Control Outreach Center is home
to three important projects – the
Arkansas Special Populations Access
Network (ASPAN), the Cancer Connection
Program and the Summer Science Discovery
Program.
ASPAN strives to foster
or expand partnerships with community
organizations and to promote cancer
control activities throughout the state.
The program focuses primarily on cancers
of the breast, prostate, and
tobacco-related sites of the lung and head
and neck. ASPAN is funded through a grant
from the National Cancer Institute.
The mission of the
Cancer Connection Program is to reduce
cancer incidence and mortality in Arkansas
through the development and implementation
of locally designed and culturally
appropriate intervention strategies. By
utilizing the established network of
resources, Cancer Connection helps each
community find solutions to its unique
cancer problems. The Sturgis Foundation
funds this program.
The Summer Science
Discovery Program – a collaborative
effort of UAMS/ACRC and the Museum of
Discovery – is a three-week, nonprofit,
science-enrichment program for at-risk
students who are 6 to 12 years old.
Undergraduate college students, medical
students and classroom teachers work with
Museum of Discovery staff members to
design exciting lesson plans that include
presentations, laboratory experiments and
tours of the museum. The Rockefeller
Foundation is the program’s primary
source of funding.
