Photo Album: College of Nursing Celebrates Golden Jubilee

APRIL 16, 2003 | The College of Nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend with several gala events.

The college honored the Little Rock Departmental Club for its advocacy for creation of the college in the 1940s and presented Alumni Awards to10 alumni and “honorary alumni” awards to 20 faculty members, staff members, and supporters for their efforts on behalf of the college.

”Fifty years after those first brave students enrolled at the University of Arkansas to launch their careers with a baccalaureate degree in nursing, we look back on incredible change in the profession, UAMS and our College of Nursing,” Dean Linda C. Hodges, Ed.D., R.N., told supporters and alumni at a banquet April 12 in Little Rock.

Dean Hodges presented medals to recipients of Alumni Awards: Cindy Crone,
MNSc, APN, executive director of Arkansas CARES at UAMS, for entrepreneurial leadership; Dr. Susan Patton, of East Arkansas Children’s Clinic (Forrest City, Arkansas) for clinical nursing practice; Jean Hayes of North Little Rock, Arkansas, a longtime nursing director at UAMS Medical Center, for service to UAMS; Deborah Carman of Sherwood, Arkansas, the first Arkansan to serve on the National Board of Governors of the American Red Cross, for organizational leadership; Claudia Beverly, Ph.D., R.N., director of the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the College of Nursing and associate director of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging at UAMS, for leadership in health policy; Joni Yarnell of Little Rock, the first certified nurse-midwife to obtain hospital privileges at UAMS Medical Center, for community health service;  Michael Carter, D.N.Sc., of Heber Springs, Arkansas, for nursing education;  Louanne Lawson, Ph.D., of Little Rock, an authority on forensic nursing, for leadership in health law; Kathy Richards, Ph.D., Little Rock, an associate professor in the college and one of only a few nurses in the nation with board certification in sleep medicine, for nursing research; and Keitha Griffith of El Dorado, Arkansas, a recent fellow in the Johnson and Johnson Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives, for leadership in health care administration.

JoAnn Smith (Class of 1963) presented plaques to recipients of Honorary Alumni Awards: Dr. Cornelia Beck of Little Rock; Dr. Pegge Bell of Aventura, Florida; Dr. Carolyn Cason of Arlington, Texas; UAMS Vice Chancellor Charles Cranford; Dr. Frances Dalme of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Bob Donaldson of Little Rock; Dr. Elois Field of Arlington, Texas; Dr. Virginia Jarratt of Beaumont, Texas, Dr. Janet Lord of Brookings, South Dakota; Benni Ogden, development director for the College of Nursing; Richard Pierson, executive director of UAMS Medical Center; Marion E. Pool of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Mary Robertson; Dr. Patricia E. Thompson; UAMS Chancellor Emeritus Harry P. Ward, M.D.; Dr. Beth Vaughan-Wrobel of the UAMS Northwest Area Health Education Center; Dr. Patricia Heacock of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Gloria Mugno of Texarkana, Texas; Sophronia Williams of Little Rock; and Dr. Martha Tygart of Shirley, Arkansas.

Earlier, alumni celebrated at a luncheon at Jeff Banks Student Union at UAMS and viewed the unveiling of a commemorative quilt by quiltmaker Pat Eaton of
Searcy, Arkansas.

On April 11, members of the Little Rock Departmental Club gathered at a special Founders Tea at the
University of Arkansas System office in Little Rock, where they presented their annual scholarships to five nursing students: Ericka Quattrone, Mason Erwin, Betsey Coffey, Regina Lynch, and Robin Mullins.
