2003 | The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
and 39th president of the
United States, Jimmy Carter, came to the
University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences (UAMS) April 1 to praise Jack
Stephens of Little Rock at the dedication
of the Jackson
T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences

At
a brief news conference before the dedication, President
Carter emphasized his long friendship with Jack Stephens
of Little Rock, a classmate at the U.S. Naval Academy, and
Mr. Stephens’ support of the Carter Center, which
provides health care and promotes democracy and human

President
Carter reminded the audience at UAMS that after studying
at the U.S. Naval Academy with Jack Stephens, he served in
the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1953. Left to right on the
stage: UAMS Chancellor Emeritus Harry P. Ward, M.D.; James
Suen, M.D., director of the Arkansas Cancer Research
Center and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology in
the UAMS College of Medicine; T. Glenn Pait, M.D.,
founding director of the Stephens Institute and an
associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery in
the UAMS College of Medicine; President B. Alan Sugg,
Ph.D., of the University of Arkansas System; Jackson T.
"Steve" Stephens, Jr.; and John P. Shock, M.D.,
executive vice chancellor of UAMS and director of the

and many other speakers calling for a swift conclusion to
