Four Nurses at UAMS Receive Scholarships for Geriatric Nursing Education and Research

APRIL 4, 2003 | Four nurses affiliated with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) have received prestigious nursing scholarships worth a total of $400,000 to support their education and research in geriatric nursing.

The American Academy of Nursing, with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City, presented a predoctoral scholarship to Gwynn V. Davis, M.N.Sc., R.N.P., and postdoctoral scholarships to Pao-Feng Tsai, Ph.D., R.N.; Catherine C. Cole, D.N.Sc., R.N.; and Lazelle E. Benefield, Ph.D., R.N.

The Hartford Foundation’s Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholars Program selected only 20 nurses to receive these awards in 2003. This program strives to produce expert patient care providers, teachers and researchers who will ultimately improve the health care of the elderly in our society. At UAMS, the four chosen nurses will study and train through the UAMS College of Nursing and the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging.

Davis is the project administrator for the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the UAMS College of Nursing. Under the direction of Reynolds Center on Aging Associate Director Claudia J. Beverly, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, the Hartford Center is one of only five such facilities in the country. Davis, a Little Rock native, is currently working on her doctorate in nursing at UAMS; her mentors are Dr. Beverly and Cornelia M. Beck, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, a professor in the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics. Davis received her bachelor’s in nursing and her master’s in nursing science from UAMS and is the former director of the Pennebaker Center for Adults, an adult day care that UAMS established in Little Rock.

Dr. Tsai, an assistant professor in the UAMS College of Nursing and an adjunct assistant professor in the Reynolds Department of Geriatrics, will serve a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UAMS. Her primary research interests include nursing management of older adults with dementia who are experiencing chronic pain or chronic illness. Dr. Beck will be her mentor. Dr. Tsai earned her bachelor’s in nursing and her master’s in public health in Taiwan. She received her master’s and doctorate in nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit. For the past two years, she has received the Faculty Scholar Award from the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at UAMS.

Dr. Cole, an assistant professor of nursing at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, will serve a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UAMS. She is studying how exercise and social activities affect the psychological well-being of nursing home patients. Her mentor will be Kathy C. Richards, Ph.D., R.N., an associate professor in the UAMS College of Nursing. Dr. Cole received her bachelor’s in nursing from Pittsburgh State University, her master’s in nursing from the University of Kansas and her doctorate in nursing science from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Benefield, an associate professor at the Texas Christian University Harris School of Nursing in Fort Worth, will serve a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UAMS. Her areas of specialization include health services management and community health nursing, especially as they relate to the caregiving of frail elders. Dr. Beck will be her mentor. Dr. Benefield earned her bachelor’s in nursing at the University of Florida, her master’s in nursing at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and her doctorate in urban management at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
