Obesity Expert to Join UAMS College of Public Health

MARCH 31, 2003 | Delia Smith West, Ph.D., a psychologist, will join the faculty of the College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) June 1. She will be a professor in the college's Department of Health Behavior and Health Education and director of the college's Multidisciplinary Obesity Program.
Dr. West's research interests include the causes and treatment of obesity and eating disorders; behavioral interventions for obesity-related medical conditions, particularly type II diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure); cancer screening recommendations and clinical trial protocols; and health care for minority women and women who live in medically underserved regions.

She is currently an associate professor in the Behavioral Medicine Unit, Division of Preventive Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. Dr. West is also the co-director of the Behavioral Assessment and Intervention Core in UAB's Center for Health Promotion. In addition, she holds positions in the UAB Clinical Nutrition Research Center, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Aging and School of Public Health's Department of Health Behavior.

Dr. West earned a master's degree and a doctorate in psychology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. She completed a clinical internship in health psychology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven, Conn. She also served a National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular behavioral medicine at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
