Attorney-General Mark Pryor Allots UAMS $300,000 from Antitrust Settlements

DEC. 19, 2002 | Attorney-General Mark Pryor presented $300,000 to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) yesterday in the single largest disbursement from two antitrust settlements.

He dedicated the funds in equal parts to the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, UAMS Psychiatry, and the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute.

"I’m really proud of UAMS," Attorney-General Pryor said. "They helped save my life. I’m proud of the research they do." Attorney-General Pryor received cancer treatment at UAMS several years ago.

Regarding the funds for the UAMS aging center, Director David A. Lipschitz, M.D., Ph.D., commented, "We are so grateful to General Pryor for his generosity and his well-known appreciation of specialized health care for seniors. This is a very welcome contribution which we will apply to the program endowment we are currently building and it will be matched dollar to dollar by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation."

Pryor, who is also U.S. Senator-elect, made a separate contribution to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, an affiliate of UAMS.

The funds are from antitrust settlements with the pharmaceutical company Mylan Laboratories and the tire manufacturer Bridgestone-Firestone. Outgoing Chief of Staff Bob Edwards in the office of the Attorney-General praised Pryor for establishing the antitrust division in the office. Attorney-General Pryor noted that Senior Assistant Attorney-General Teresa Brown handled the two cases.

Attorney-General Pryor allotted smaller amounts from the proceeds of the cases to the following agencies: Arkansas AIDS Foundation, Alzheimer’s Arkansas Programs and Services, Ozark AIDS Resources and Services, Helping People with AIDS, Jefferson County Comprehensive Care, Arkansas Area Agencies on Aging, Osceola/Mississippi County Shalom Agency, and Safe Jonesboro Coalition.
