Medicine Alumni Met in June for Traditional Parties, Awards

AUG. 1, 2002 | Alumni of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) gathered in June for their annual reunion.

Among other highlights of the weekend, alumni toured gross anatomy laboratories, the History of Medicine Archives, and the Clinical Skills Center where medical students practice on actors posing as patients. The June 7-9 reunion involved 24 separate events for 325 participants.

The alumni organization, the Arkansas Caduceus Club, elected the following new officers: Al Gordon, M.D., of Fayetteville, president; Phil Stone, M.D., of Conway, president-elect; Thomas H. Wortham, M.D., of Jacksonville, vice president; and Joseph Bates, M.D., of Little Rock, secretary. Dr. Wortham is also immediate past president. The club elected these trustees: Michael Mackey, M.D., of Jonesboro (District 1); B. Brooks Lawrence, M.D., of Conway (District 2); Betty Ball, M.D., of Texarkana (District 6); Noland Hagood, M.D., of Arkadelphia (District 7); and Steve Strode, M.D., (Non-alumni House Staff); Derek Kelly, M.D. (House Staff); and Harry Brown, M.D. (Faculty), all of Little Rock.

The club presented the 2002 Distinguished Alumnus Award to Patrick H. Henry, M.D., of St. Louis, (Class of 1958), a hematologist and oncologist. It presented the 2002 Distinguished Faculty Award to Debra Henry Fiser, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics in the college.
