JULY 22, 2002 | Executives with Entergy Corporation visited the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
(UAMS) today to learn more about the campus research and business development program.
Curt Hebert, executive vice president for external affairs, and Deanna Rodriguez, vice president for corporate contributions, traveled from New Orleans for a briefing by Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., Timothy O'Brien, Ph.D., director of
UAMS Arkansas
Bioventures, and other research leaders at
UAMS.
The New Orleans executives came at the invitation of Hugh McDonald, president and chief executive officer of Entergy Arkansas. McDonald is a member of the UAMS Foundation Fund Board. McDonald and Mike
Maulden, director of external affairs for Entergy Arkansas, also attended the briefing today.
Arkansas Lieutenant Gov. Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, Donaghey Dean William C. Goolsby of the College of Business Administration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
(UALR), and members of the UAMS Arkansas BioVentures advisory board were special guests at a reception for the Entergy executives.
"We are glad Entergy's leaders want to learn about the technology development we are doing at UAMS and about the potential in UAMS research for economic growth, education, and sustaining healthy communities," Dr. O'Brien said afterwards.
The Entergy officials heard presentations from several research leaders on groundbreaking innovations at
UAMS. Stavros Manolagas, M.D., described potential pharmaceutical treatments for osteoporosis while Milton
Waner, M.D., explained a new device for viewing blood vessels. Curtis Coleman, president and chief executive officer of Safe Foods, gave a presentation on his company's product, which prohibits bacterial growth on processed meats and vegetables.
