State, KARK Honor AR CARES Board Member for Volunteerism

JULY 3, 2002 | A volunteer for the UAMS program that helps mothers with substance abuse problems and their children received a coveted Community Service Award last week from KARK-TV Channel 4 and the state.

Arkansas CARES, a program of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the UAMS College of Medicine, nominated Lyle Heim, Ph.D., for the award. The Office of the Governor and the Division of Volunteerism in the state Department of Human Services co-sponsor the awards. Dr. Heim was among 11 recipients at the 25th annual awards program June 25.

KARK recorded the program and broadcast it Sun. night, June 30. (See the station's video feature about Dr. Heim.)

"We were so pleased that Dr. Heim received this recognition. Arkansas CARES has been blessed by many wonderful volunteers and donors over its 10-year history, and Dr. Heim has been an inspiration to all of us," the program director, Cynthia C. Crone, APN, said.

Dr. Heim, who joined the Arkansas CARES advisory board in 2001, led a crash repair program for the CARES cottages, where families live while mothers undergo therapy for addiction and related problems. The cottages, on the grounds of the historic Methodist Children's Home in central Little Rock, were in poor condition and the program had little funding to make necessary repairs. Thanks to his leadership and hard work, the program was able to earn reaccreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

hours per week over a six-week period prior [the JCAO] site visit. He recruited other volunteers (adults and youth) from his faith community, Lakewood United Methodist Church. He managed and supervised volunteer workers and multiple tasks including identifying and securing needed materials, painting in all seven buildings on our campus, repairing kitchen cabinets, stoves, and ventilation systems, replacing doors to individual client/family sleeping rooms, and [improving the overall] quality and safety of the living and working environments for families served at Arkansas CARES. He worked many hours at his home workshop preparing structures needed for the cottages, often spending his own money on much of the materials," Crone and volunteer coordinator, Cathleen Hall, M.S., wrote in the nomination.

"Arkansas CARES (and therefore the entire Department of Psychiatry) passed our accreditation review," they concluded.

Crone and Hall expressed "heartfelt appreciation for [Dr. Heim's] service and ... awe at his character, talents, tenacity and results."

In accepting the award, Dr. Heim said Arkansas CARES meets a great need "so these children have a chance and their mothers have a chance." He told the audience, "Many people think volunteers give, when in fact volunteers receive ... I can never earn my way into Heaven, but I can do something to show I appreciate what these people have done for me."

As part of the Community Service Awards event, the law offices of Gary Green in Little Rock donated $500 to Arkansas CARES in honor of Dr. Heim.
