Cancer Survivors Celebrate on ACRC’s "Hallowed Ground"

JUNE 6, 2002 | Cancer survivors came back to the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) Sun., June 2, to share their stories and celebrate, with one survivor calling ACRC "hallowed ground" because "miracles happen here."

More than 50 former patients participated in ACRC’s observance of National Cancer Survivors Day, "A Celebration of Life." The day started with a welcome and opening remarks by James Suen, M.D., director of ACRC. Five survivors of described their experiences in a pane discussion. Their diagnoses included breast and prostate cancers, sarcoma and melanoma, representing a handful of the cancers treated at ACRC. The participants continued to share stories informally at a reception after the program.

Their stories were emotional and inspirational while embracing hope for today and promise for tomorrow—a founding tenet of the ACRC, according to Harold Dean, LCSW, who organized the event. In addition to hardships during initial diagnosis and treatment, cancer patients may face financial hardships, employment problems, psychological struggles, and strains on personal relationships.

"This event celebrates the strength and determination of our patients," Dean said. "It is a time of bonding for cancer survivors as well as showing cancer patients ways of successfully coping with the disease." Many former patients at the event attributed their success to strong support from family and friends, excellent care at the ACRC, and unwavering spirituality.
