Cancer Center Will Do Breast Cancer Checks in Underserved Counties Thanks to Komen Foundation Grant

APRIL 25, 2002 | The Arkansas affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has awarded $381,609 to the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) for a mammography screening outreach program. The award is the largest ever granted by the affiliate.

The grant will support mammography screening in Arkansas counties that currently do not have mammography facilities.  The cancer center, part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will transport a mammography unit by van to participating primary care clinics and will offer the same quality mammograms as at permanent units.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Arkansas women with approximately 2,000 new cases diagnosed in 2001.  Four hundred of that 2,000 will die of breast cancer in the coming year.  In addition, less than one-third of Arkansas women get regular screening mammograms. This grant will help bridge the gap between early detection/screening and late stage diagnosis.

“By providing modular mammography screening and introducing patient-generated screening, we will increase awareness and frequency of screening by eliminating the accessibility barrier,” Rhonda Henry-Tillman, M.D., director of the Modular Mammography Program, said. “Taking the modular mammography to primary care clinics reinforces the necessity for primary care physicians to become more proactive in breast cancer early detection screening.”
