FEB.
7, 2002 | The dean of nursing at the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) led a discussion
in Atlanta Feb. 4 on the nationwide shortage of
nursing educators.
Linda C. Hodges, Ed.D., dean of the UAMS College
of Nursing, is president of the Council
on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the
Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) in Atlanta.
The council convened about 125 nursing educators Feb.
4 to discuss the mounting shortage of nursing
educators.

Dean Hodges explained that many nursing programs cannot meet the
demand among potential nursing students.
”If you don’t have the faculty, you can’t educate them,”
she said.
Dean Hodges told the council about Arkansas’s loan program for
nurses who earn advanced degrees in order to teach.
SREB has reported that the nursing educator shortage is critical
in the South. Eighty-six
institutions in the region do not have enough faculty for their
undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, SREB found in a
survey.
