Here’s to Your Health: Herbal Supplements

FEB. 1, 2002 | Herbal supplements will be the topic of Here’s to Your Health on radio broadcasts Feb. 4-8.

Herbal or botanical dietary supplements can have dangerous interactions with other medications. The use of such “natural” supplements, unregulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is increasing. According to one study, 14 percent of the U.S. population has used such supplements.

Many patients neglect to tell their physicians they are using substances such as St. John’s wort, saw palmetto, and ginseng. These supplements can reduce the efficacy of conventional medications.

Bill Gurley, Ph.D., an associate professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, will discuss this topic. Dr. Gurley and his investigative teammates are leaders in research on the effects of ephedra-based supplements. They also were the first to discover potential problems with mixing a component of St. John’s wort with other drugs.
