Many patients neglect to tell their physicians they are using
substances such as St. John’s wort, saw palmetto, and ginseng.
These supplements can reduce the efficacy of conventional
medications.
Bill Gurley, Ph.D., an associate professor in the College of
Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences,
will discuss this topic. Dr. Gurley and his investigative
teammates are leaders in research on the effects of ephedra-based
supplements. They also were the first to discover potential
problems with mixing a component of St. John’s wort with other
drugs.
