Receive $5.5 Million to Study Drug Treatment for Addicts, “Growing”
Drugs in Crop Plants

NOV.
1, 2001 | Scientists at the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences (UAMS) and the University of Arkansas
at Fayetteville (UAF) have received $5.5 million to
develop and test new medicines for methamphetamine
abuse.
Methamphetamine is an illegal, addictive stimulant
drug with a high potential for abuse and dependence.
Users may become addicted quickly and use it with
increasing frequency and in increasing doses,
according to the National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the National
Institutes of Health. There are currently no specific
medications for treating methamphetamine overdose or
addiction.
