UAMS Pharmacologist to Describe Arkansas Biosciences Institute to Biotechnology Association

UAMS Faculty Members Participated in International Meeting on Biotechnology

OCT. 22, 2001 | A UAMS pharmacologist will describe the new Arkansas Biosciences Institute (ABI) at a conference Fri., Nov. 2.

S. Michael Owens, Ph.D., director of the ABI, will discuss the institute’s role in fostering research and collaboration among member institutions, including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (UAF), Arkansas State University, the University of Arkansas Division for Agriculture, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He will speak at the annual meeting of the Arkansas Biotechnology Association (ABA) in Little Rock.

Dr. Owens is a Wilbur D. Mills Chair in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Prevention in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, UAMS College of Medicine.

The ABA meeting also will include a luncheon address by Jamie Coffin, Ph.D., of IBM Life Sciences Solutions. Dr. Coffin earned a degree in chemistry at UAF. Experts on venture capitalism will discuss the growing support for Arkansas biotechnology companies. Representatives of several agricultural companies will discuss the impact of biotechnology on their businesses. Two members of the Arkansas General Assembly will report their findings at a recent meeting of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

The conference will be 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Southwestern Bell Auditorium of the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce. Registration, including a continental breakfast and lunch, is $100, with extra lunch tickets $50.
