News from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

JULY 26, 2001 | The chair of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia will be the next dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., is a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine and an international expert in diabetes and prenatal diagnosis and therapy, and a former associate professor at Yale University School of Medicine.

UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., announced Dr. Reece's appointment today. Dr. Reece will begin making monthly visits to the campus in August and will assume the deanship of medicine at UAMS full-time in January. Dr. Reece is currently the Abraham Roth Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at Temple University School of Medicine. In that department he also directs the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

“Dr. Reece is a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a highly respected clinician, researcher, and educator. He clearly was the strongest candidate among a group of highly qualified candidates, so we were very fortunate to be able to recruit him to UAMS,” Chancellor Wilson said.

“I consider it an honor and a privilege to be both appointed by Dr. Wilson and to be his successor as dean of the College of Medicine. I am truly impressed with the institution's commitment to its missions of quality health care, education, research, and service to Arkansas. This commitment is no doubt improving the health of all Arkansans. I look forward to joining the UAMS family,” Dr. Reece said Wednesday.

Dr. Reece is a native of Jamaica, West Indies. He received his B.S. degree from Long Island University and his M.D. degree from New York University School of Medicine; Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of West Indies and a M.B.A. (August 2001) from the Fox School of Business and Management, Temple University. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University – Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He was on the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine from 1982 to 1990. In 1991, he was recruited to be chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Temple University School of Medicine.

In addition to his administrative role at Temple, Dr. Reece maintains an active clinical practice in maternal-fetal medicine, including diabetes and prenatal diagnosis and therapy. His research focuses on diabetes in pregnancy, birth defects, and prenatal diagnosis. He has studied the mechanisms of diabetes-induced birth defects for many years and has made critical discoveries into the biology of this problem and has advanced methods for prevention and treatment. He has also obtained numerous research grants. Dr. Reece has written or co-written more than 400 articles, chapters, and abstracts; nine textbooks; and four monographs in the field of maternal-fetal medicine and prenatal diagnosis and treatment. He is a member of several scientific organizations, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves on many national scientific, governmental, and civic boards and committees.

Dr. Reece is married to Sharon A. Reece, M.A., J.D., LLM, a law professor at Rutgers University School of Law and an authority on tax law. They have three daughters. The eldest is a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University in molecular biology; the middle daughter will be a senior in high school in Philadelphia; the youngest is in the eighth grade and will transfer to a school in Little Rock. Two of their daughters are accomplished classical musicians who give concerts in and outside the United States.

Dr. Reece's appointment concludes a selection process that began in October, when Chancellor Wilson succeeded Chancellor Emeritus Harry P. Ward, M.D. The chair of the Department of Pathology, Aubrey J. Hough, Jr., M.D., chaired the search committee.

The dean's office is important in fostering the mission of UAMS, including education, research, clinical care, and service to the state of Arkansas. The dean is the chief administrative and academic officer of the College of Medicine and reports to the chancellor. Dr. Reece will be responsible for 23 medical school departments, two autonomous divisions, a central professional practice plan, 582 undergraduate medical students, and more than 600 residents and fellows.

Dr. Reece succeeds Chancellor Wilson, who was dean of medicine from 1986 to 2000, and Interim Dean John P. Shock, M.D., who is chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at UAMS.
