UAMS Invests J.L. Mehta as Stebbins Chair of Cardiology

APRIL 5, 2001 | The College of Medicine of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) formally installed J.L. Mehta, M.D., Ph.D., as the Howard and Elsie Stebbins Chair in Cardiology yesterday.

Dr. Mehta joined the UAMS faculty in October, accepting the endowed chairmanship of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. Yesterday he praised the “spirit of academia” at UAMS and thanked Howard and Elsie Stebbins of Little Rock for their gifts to UAMS.

“We welcome you with open arms,” Mr. Stebbins told Dr. Mehta just before Chancellor Wilson and Dean Shock placed a medallion representing the endowed chair around Dr. Mehta's neck. “The addition of you and your accomplished family to our community” will benefit all of Arkansas, Mr. Stebbins said.

The Stebbinses endowed the chair in cardiology in memory of their late son, A. Howard Stebbins IV.

Dr. Mehta recognized Thomas E. Andreoli, M.D., chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine; UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D.; John Shock, M.D., interim dean of the College of Medicine; and the faculty of his division. He described his “hopes and dreams” of making the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UAMS a “world class” center for patient care, teaching, and research.

Dr. Mehta's wife, Paulette Mehta, M.D., chief of the Section of Hematology and Oncology at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, attended the ceremony and a luncheon beforehand, along with several friends of the Stebbins family and most of the cardiology faculty. The College of Medicine has 33 endowed chairs.
Endowments are private gifts to the University that provide annual income to support faculty positions, including chairs and professorships, as well as research funds, lecturships, scholarships, and other purposes.
