UAMS
High-Risk Pregnancy Consultations Now Available in Southwest Arkansas
|
JAN.
10, 2002 | Obstetricians in southwest Arkansas can now
involve specialists at the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences (UAMS) when they conduct fetal
ultrasound tests on patients with high-risk
pregnancies.
UAMS Medical Center has begun providing consultations
over long-distance television hook-ups to
obstetricians in southwest Arkansas through the Southwest
Arkansas Area Health Education Center (AHEC).
Physicians
at the Southwest AHEC will perform the fetal
ultrasound tests in collaboration with local
obstetricians, delivering the real-time images to
maternal-fetal medicine specialists at UAMS via
compressed interactive video. The specialists at UAMS,
the physicians at the Southwest AHEC, and the patients
will be able to hear and see each other on television
screens during the consultations. (Physicians may call
1-800-358-7229, the referral number for the
Reproductive Genetics Program, and request the
Telemedicine Clinic to arrange the long-distance
consultations for their patients.)

The long-distance consultations are
a new service by UAMS to patients in southwest Arkansas. UAMS
began providing consultations to patients in northwest Arkansas
in April 2001.
Stan Collins, M.D., director of the Southwest AHEC, commented,
"We at AHEC-Southwest are very excited about partnering
with the UAMS obstetricians and maternal-fetal specialists to
make this High Risk OB Clinic a reality in our community.
Patients with high-risk pregnancies will be medically served
here at home when they might otherwise not elect to go to Little
Rock for this medical need. The clinic will provide educational
opportunity for the resident physicians and nursing staff and
students in this specialized area. What an opportunity!
”Thanks to the UAMS OB-Gyn Department and the Telemedical
Communications services,” he said.
UAMS
Medical Center
is home to the only high-risk pregnancy program in Arkansas.
These board certified physicians in maternal-fetal medicine are
trained and experienced in helping high-risk pregnant women
avoid some of the complications associated with a wide range of
diseases or conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure,
heart disease, asthma, lupus, epilepsy, lung disease, kidney
disease, RH negative blood, herpes, and HIV.
The Office of Telemedical
Communications at UAMS operates a network of lectures,
classes, and consultations for students and health care
practitioners via compressed interactive video.
