News from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Rockefeller
Foundation Funds UAMS Summer Science Program for Youth
|
JAN. 3, 2002 | The Winthrop
Rockefeller Foundation of Little Rock has awarded
$372,000 to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
(UAMS) to sponsor educational programs for at-risk youth during
the next four summers.
The UAMS Summer Science Discovery Program will promote careers
in the health sciences to elementary-age children in Pulaski
County.
Billy Thomas, M.D., assistant dean of minority affairs in the
UAMS College of Medicine, will direct the program with
assistance from Raymond André Watson, director of the science
program and community outreach coordinator for the college.
Classroom teachers and the Arkansas
Museum of Discovery will design the lesson plans for the
one-day programs, to take place at the museum in Little Rock.

The university proposed the project to the foundation as a way
to address the small proportion of minority students in its five
colleges and graduate school. Less than ten percent of the
university’s students are minorities. The summer program will
encourage students to study the sciences in high school and
pursue careers in health sciences.
UAMS will contact county elementary schools and other
children’s programs to invite applications. For more
information, contact Raymond
André Watson (501-526-6334).
