Team-based Learning in the Health Sciences: Is it a strategy
to enhance professional competencies?
This presentation will review the development of TBL as an
educational strategy and its current applications in health sciences
education. Since health science education, at all levels in several
disciplines, is becoming 'competency-based,' using TBL in the core curricula
is a valuable way to help learners develop critical thinking and teamwork
collaboration skills.

Dr. Parmelee is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
at the Boonshoft School of Medicine of Wright State University in Dayton,
Ohio. At Boonshoft, he has pioneered Team-Based Learning (TBL) throughout
its pre-clinical curriculum as an alternative and supplement to lecture
teaching and to enhance medical student active learning and teamwork. He
and his institution sponsored the 4th Annual National Conference
on Team-Based Learning in Medical and Health Sciences Education in June
2005, and he has conducted many faculty development workshops on TBL
throughout the country.
