Lifelong Learning: What does it mean and how can we help our
learners to develop the skills?
This presentation will consider the concept of lifelong
learning, and the skills and abilities required. It will also consider
current thinking about learning in practice and from experience. Lastly, the
ways in which lifelong learning can be fostered across the continuum will be
explored.

Dr. Karen Mann received her Ph.D. in
Education in 1986 from Dalhousie University. In that same year, she joined
Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. She held the positions of Director
of the Medical Education Unit, Assistant Director for Research in Continuing
Medical Education, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education
and Student Affairs. Currently Professor and Director of the Division of
Medical Education, she is involved in teaching, faculty development, and
research in medical education. Since 1998, Dr. Mann has been a faculty
member in Harvard Medical School’s Harvard-Macy Program for Physician
Educators. Dr. Mann serves on the editorial boards of Academic Medicine,
Medical Education and the Journalof Continuing Education in
the Health Professions. She has served as Chair of the Research in
Medical Education committee of the AAMC, and is currently past Chair of the
Research in Medical Education Section. Dr. Mann is a past President of the
Canadian Association for Medical Education; she received that Association’s
award for distinguished contributions to medical education in 1996, as well
as a Dalhousie Instructional Leadership award in 2000. In 2002, she was
elected to the Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine. Dr. Mann is
internationally recognized for her expertise in curriculum development,
teaching and learning methodologies and program evaluation. As an invited
presenter and keynote speaker, Dr. Mann has participated in scholarly
conferences and research projects in Australia, United Arab Emirates,
Norway, Portugal, Austria, England, Canada and the United States. A lifelong
resident of Nova Scotia, Dr. Mann enjoys music, cooking, walks with her
husband and dog, and visits with her children and three grandchildren.
