Why Is It So Hard to Communicate about a Student's
Marginal Clinical Performance?
This presentation will describe a three-year project to
improve the quality of resident performance assessments in two General
Surgery residency programs. The intervention we used is applicable to
on-the-job clinical performance assessment in most health professions
educational programs.

John Littlefield is Director of Academic Informatics Services (AIS), an
educational and research support department at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He is also Director of the
Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching, an interdisciplinary unit that
provides leadership, direction, and resources to advance excellence in
teaching at UTHSCSA. Dr. Littlefield's research has focused on teaching and
evaluating students in clinical settings. He has conducted numerous faculty
development workshops and has published or presented over 100 peer reviewed
articles, book chapters, and professional presentations.
He received a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas
at Austin.
