Improving Clinical
Performance Assessment
Dr. Littlefield will describe quality
assurance for assessments in clinical performance, demonstrate good coaching skills
(corrective feedback) for students and recommend improvements to a performance assessment
system in which clinicians participate.

Dr. Littlefield is the Director of Academic Informatics
Services, an educational development, distance learning and research support department at
the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has published 70 peer
reviewed articles and conducted over 100 faculty development workshops for academic health
centers and professional organizations. He received a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from
the University of Texas at Austin.
Preparation for the Workshop

Read: D.I. Newble, Assessing clinical competence at the undergraduate
level, Medical Education, 26(6), 504-11, 1992.

Reflect on your experiences with outstanding and marginal performance in clinical
settings. Your past experience with students and clinical colleagues will be a very
important reference point for achieving the objectives of the workshop.

Read chapters 27 and 28 in the Dent/Harden text book.
