The New Competencies:
The Need for Lifelong Learning and Faculty Development
The health professions are
in the midst of major changes. These changes are requiring all health care
professionals, both trainees and faculty alike, to learn new knowledge,
skills, and attitudes. The talk will cover why new approaches to lifelong
learning and faculty development are needed and briefly review some
initiatives underway to help faculty acquire the new competencies.

Dr. Holmboe is currently Associate Professor of
Medicine and Director of Faculty Development and Evaluation and serves as
the Director for Clinical Skills Assessment at Yale Medical School. His main
research interests involve investigating new methods for the evaluation of
clinical competence and quality of care in both the inpatient and ambulatory
settings. He graduated with honors from the University of Rochester School
of Medicine in 1985. After completing an internship at the National Naval
Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, he spent four years as a general
medical officer with the Navy and Marines. He completed a residency and
chief residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a fellowship in the Robert
Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University.
