Virtual Reality and Next Generation Simulations: Do They Have a
Place in Health Sciences Curricula?

One hour of CME category 1 credit is available.
In her presentation, Dr. Helene Hoffman will
provide an overview of VR in health education and discuss the benefits
of virtual learning environments and next-generation simulations. She
will also describe the Anatomic VisualizeR project and will
demonstrate the implementation of this system in a variety of learning
contexts.
Dr. Hoffman is Adjunct Professor in the
Department of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Curriculum and
Educational Computing at the University of California San Diego School
of Medicine. Her responsibilities include development, implementation,
and evaluation of technology-based resources and services for
undergraduate medical curriculum. Dr. Hoffman's research activities
focus on human learning and the educational application of new
technologies such as virtual reality. Since 1993, she has been
Principle Investigator on grants from the
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval
Research that have led to the development of a virtual learning
environment called "Anatomic VisualizeR."
