William N. P. Herbert, MD
The Secret of Life in Academic Medicine


After 20+ years in academic medicine, involving patient care, teaching rounds, conferences, research, presentations, innumerable meetings, administration, chief of this and that, Dr.Herbert has discovered the "secret of life" in academia. Drawing on his experiences as a faculty member at the University of North Carolina, Duke University and the University of Virginia, he will share this discovery during this presentation.

Dr. William N.C. Herbert, MD is the William Norman Thornton Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Virginia Medical School. After graduating from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, he completed residency training at Vanderbilt University and a fellowship at University of Texas health Science Center in Dallas. Dr. Herbert has a distinguished career in the field of Ob/Gyn in his research and publications. In addition, he has attended North Carolina Business School’s Management & Leadership Institute and the APGO/Wyeth-Ayerst Academic Leadership Skills Program. As a co-founder of the Teaching Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina Medical School, he has been an innovator in the field of medical education.
