What is Biomedical
Informatics? A People-Focused Exploration
Informatics
seems to mean something different to every person who uses the term. One
view of informatics is based on the simple "fundamental theorem" that
persons can perform better--as clinicians, researchers, or students--when
supported by information technology than they would if unassisted.
Biomedical informatics, then, should build and deploy advanced technology
that promises to make people "better" and examine whether the people
actually are "better" when this technology is deployed. In this view
of informatics, people are cast in the starring role.

Charles P. Friedman is
Professor and Associate Vice Chancellor for Biomedical Informatics and
Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the University of
Pittsburgh. He is currently serving as Senior Scholar at the National
Library of Medicine. Originally trained in physics, Dr. Friedman developed
an interest in education early in his career and applied it to physics
education at M.I.T and later to medical education at the University of North
Carolina. Dr. Friedman has always had interests in computing and information
technology that developed over time into a focus on biomedical
informatics. In 1996, he left North Carolina for Pittsburgh to found an
academic informatics center that spans the health sciences and addresses
information technology in application to health care, biomedical research,
health professions education, and the administration of academic health
centers.
