UAMS is pursuing an improved sustainable future, based on the concept of “People, Planet, Profit”, which means to benefit the people of UAMS (employees, students, patients, and the community), the environment, and the financial status of UAMS, its people, and its community. This involves efforts such as energy conservation, waste reduction, recycling, various “green” initiatives, but all in a cost effective manner. This will involve efforts of all staff and students to be successful. Some things are little, such as turning off unneeded lights, taking the stairs, recycling when possible, and many other initiatives.
We are highlighting various efforts of UAMS staff and students, who are making significant contributions to UAMS sustainability. Many people want to know what they can do today. Our Sustainability Pledge offers many suggestions; take a look and make the personal pledge.
Sustainability:
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” -- The Brundtland Commission, 1987
UAMS Sustainability Statement:
We plan to create a campus consistent with the principles of triple bottom line management: People, Planet, Profit:
People - socially attentive
Planet - environmentally conscientious
Profit - economically viable
As these principles are incorporated into everyday life at UAMS, they will improve the personal well-being of staff, students, faculty, patients, and community, decrease impact of UAMS on the environment and improve environmental quality, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. UAMS can be an organization that is sustainable today and for generations into the future.
