Businessman,
pilot and quiet philanthropist, Jim was born in Portland, Maine and came to
Little Rock to join the family lumber and cooperage business. Mr. Hamlen
joined the U.S. Army in 1941, training as a flight engineer and glider pilot.
He enjoyed flying, especially gliding, until well into his 80's.
Mr. Hamlen was a lifetime member of the Chancellor's Circle.
The James H. Hamlen II Boardroom is a visible tribute to his generous bequest,
his keen interest in the medical field and his loyalty to the University of Arkansas
for Medical Sciences.
