The first science cafés (Café Scientifique) were started in Europe in the early 1990’s. The intent was to offer a relaxed public forum for the exchange of ideas (over coffee, beer, and food) in a friendly setting where anyone could come and sharpen their knowledge of the modern sciences. It was also a place where people could ask questions about the relevance, risk, and any ethical concerns relating to a topic. Today, there are science cafés around the world. Cafés, pubs and restaurants serve as venues for scientists and other experts to give short public presentations on specific topics followed by Q&A and open discussion. Each Science Café event includes a moderator who introduces 2-3 panelists addressing a monthly topic as it relates to his/her experience and expertise. After each speakers’ brief (10-15 minute) talk, the audience asks questions and discusses the topic. The moderator fills in the gaps and facilitates questions. The Science Café provides an opportunity for an interesting night out, a chance to meet new people, learn new things, and discuss current scientific research/applications in plain English. Join Us!
