Invites proposals for novel research in areas that address specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. This program is designed to support research in scientific areas identified by the institutes and centers, as identified in the specific Challenge Areas and Topics.
 
Equipment and Infrastructure Opportunities
Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) NCRR $100,000 to $500,000 Not applicable March 23, 2009
Program solicits applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade commercially available instruments that cost at least $100,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $500,000. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
 
High-End Instrumentation Grant (HEI) NCRR $600,000 to $8M April 6, 2009 (not required and not binding) May 6, 2009
Program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase a single major item of equipment to be used for biomedical research that costs at least $600,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $8 million.
 
Core Facility Renovation, Repair, and Improvement Program NCRR $1M to $10M Not applicable September 17, 2009
Solicits applications from institutions that propose to renovate, repair or improve core facilities. Support can be requested to alter and renovate the core facility as well as to improve the general equipment in the core facility or to purchase general equipment for specialized groups of researchers. In addition, funding can be requested in support of centralizing similar existing core facilities in different departments.
 
Extramural Research Facilities Improvement Program NCRR Three sizes:
$2M to $5M; $5M to $10M; $10M to $15M
Not applicable May 6, 2009 (projects between $2M and $5M); June 17, 2009 (projects between $10M and $15M); July 17, 2009 (projects between $5M and $10M)
Solicits applications from institutions that propose to expand, remodel, renovate or alter biomedical or behavioral research facilities. The major objective is to facilitate and enhance the conduct of Public Health Service-supported biomedical and behavioral research by supporting the costs of improving nonfederal basic research, clinical research and animal facilities to meet the biomedical or behavioral research, research training or research support needs of an institution.
