These topics are all ongoing with the aid of various medical students and
residents. One honors medical student has taken a preliminary plan
all the way to presentation in a national meeting and publication in a
national journal over the past three years. Others have been active
in summer projects, co-authored various papers, and become co-principal
investigators of ongoing research projects including current ones studying
relative efficacy of various local anesthetics in humans and relative
efficacy of various low-frequency ultrasound, microbubble, and tPA
combination therapies in a bench-top laboratory setting.
A new research facility is scheduled for late 2003 in the Barton Research
Building. This will house an angiographic room for study of animals
and be available for use of other departments on a contractual basis.
Dr. Culp is the director of this facility, which will be one of very few in
the country to use high-quality equipment specifically in an animal
laboratory setting. This is close to the Radiology Department and in
the same research building as the major Department of Laboratory Animal
Medicine facility with its support personnel, veterinarians, surgical
suites, and animal facilities.
William C. Culp, M.D.
Dr. Culp is the principal investigator on these projects.
In the past, research interests have been focused on biliary stents and
also small bowel transplantation problems. Other interests include
sailboat racing, cruising, and nautical archeology, where he spends
considerable time on field trips and serving as a director of the Institute
of Nautical Archeology. Dr. Culp also serves on the Board of
Directors of CIRREF (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research
and Education Foundation), the research and education arm of the Society of
Interventional Radiology, and has devoted a large amount of time and
funding to these efforts. Other interests include reviewing
manuscripts for three journals and various local community activities.
