 Pediatric Cardiovascular Imaging

Multidetector Computed Tomography

Recently, Arkansas Children’s Hospital has acquired a 16 slice multidetector computed tomography scanner. The new technology allows for rapid evaluation of the heart, arteries, and veins. Patients with pacemakers or other contra-indications for magnetic resonance can be evaluated. The technique is rapid, with scans lasting only a few seconds. This allows even critically ill children to be evaluated. The need for sedation is reduced in children undergoing multidetector computed tomography. In the future, it is expected that cardiac gating will allow for heart function evaluation similar to magnetic resonance.
