 UAMS/ACRC Breast Center

Fighting Breast Cancer With Advanced Diagnostics

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women. Approximately 200,000 new breast cancer cases are diagnoses annually, and approximately 40,000 women will die of breast cancer this year.

Discovering breast cancer early offers you the best chance of beating the disease. That's why a mammogram is so important. A mammogram is basically an X-ray of your breast. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammogram beginning at age 40. It is also strongly suggested that you get a baseline mammogram at age 35. This baseline mammogram will give your doctor a valuable comparative picture of your breast should suspicious lumps or problems appear on a later mammogram.

The UAMS/ACRC (Arkansas Cancer Research Center) Breast Center offers all forms of breast imaging, including both diagnostic and screening mammograms with Computer Aided Detection (CAD), ductograms, breast ultrasound, needle localization, cyst aspiration, and core biopsy (both stereotactic and ultrasound-guided).

We also are the exclusive provider in central Arkansas for a unique MRI program called RODEO. Candidates for RODEO include the following:

  1. Women with inconclusive mammograms that may be caused by dense breast tissue, implants, or scar tissue.
  2. Women who have already been diagnosed with breast cancer or have suspicious masses based on the results of mammography, sonography, or clinical examination.
  3. Women with large tumors and tumors that extend to the skin or chest wall and who are receiving chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor before sugery. The RODEO procedure can show if the chemotherapy is working and, if so, how much of the tumor remains.

The UAMS/ACRC Breast Center has some of the most advanced technology available in the country, including the only digital mammography equipment in central Arkansas. All diagnostic patients recieve the results of their tests before leaving the Breast Center.

Multi-disciplinary Approach To Care
UAMS/ACRC logo We have assembled a team of some of the most respected physicians and health care professionals in the nation, experts who specialize in diagnosing and fighting breast cancer.

Our physician team includes breast surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. All surgical and complicated cases are discussed with this group at a weekly multi-disciplinary breast conference. Plus, each doctor on this team is an expert in his/her field and a faculty member of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where they help train most of Arkansas' physicians.

Robert L. Fincher, M.D., medical director of breast imaging at the UAMS/ACRC Breast Center, pioneered virtually every breast imaging procedure in Arkansas including both stereotactic and ultradound-guided core biopsy. He was in private practice in Little Rock for 28 years and developed the breast imaging program for Baptist Breast Center where he served as medical director. Dr. Fincher has interpreted will over 100,000 mammograms, performed over 15,000 breast ultrasound, 8,000 needle localizations, and 3,000 core biopsies.
