Library Resources
The department maintains a resident library resource room with the latest
radiology texts and journals and high-speed computers with internet
access. A complete resident-compiled teaching film file, as well as
CD-ROM and laser disc teaching files, provide an excellent review of both
rare diseases and more common entities. The 5,000 film American College
of Radiology teaching file is included in our library.
Clinical Resources
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Medical Center has
long been known for offering the most sophisticated medicine in Arkansas -
much of which is found nowhere else in the state. Our Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) Center opened in 1986, and we are the only medical
facility in Arkansas to offer Gamma Knife therapy. A new radiation
oncology facility, affiliated with the Central Arkansas Radiation Treatment
Institute (CARTI) is housed on the UAMS campus. The Breast Imaging
Program at UAMS is among the world's leaders in several innovative techniques
for detecting and treating breast cancer. The UAMS/ACRC breast center
just opened under the direction of Robert Fincher, MD. An integral
part of the breast program, Steven Harms, M.D., is conducting clinical
trials of RODEO breast MRI and laser lumpectomy. Recently, UAMS
introduced the most technologically advanced PET scanner to the state of
Arkansas and a new facility that will house the PET Center and Arkansas'
first medical cyclotron is under construction.
Residents rotate among three hospitals with a total of 1200 beds. The
UAMS Medical Center, a 400-bed acute and referral facility, is the clinical
teaching arm of the UAMS system and the hub of the medical center
complex. All medical, surgical, and psychiatric sub-specialties are
represented. There are extensive out-patient services, as well as a
busy emergency department with a large volume of trauma. Since 1996,
U.S. News & World Report has listed our hospital as "One of America's Best"
every year. John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans' Hospital is a
505-bed general medical and surgical facility that is connected to the UAMS
campus. Arkansas Children's Hospital is a 300-bed tertiary referral
care facility that is now the 6th largest children's hospital in the
country.
The three hospitals maintain state-of-the-art equipment including six 1.5
MR scanners with MR angiography packages for clinical use and five CT
scanners. Nuclear Medicine equipment includes 5 Gamma cameras.
Numerous ultrasound units are available, and ultrasound equipment features
color-flow doppler. The PET center uses a state-of-the-art whole body
PET scanner and we are building a new building to house two PET/CT scanners
and our own on-campus medical cyclotron. We also have a miniature PET
scanner (called a microPET) for medical research.
