The Department of Radiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has an outstanding teaching program. In all manners, the clinical care is outstanding, and we are fortunate to have superb clinical services, many of them with national prominence. There is a concerted effort on the part of the faculty in Radiology to be certain that the residents are taught, and that we never forget the reason that they are here. Teaching occurs at all hours of the day and evening, with the Radiology faculty being present in the institution until 10:00 in the evening, every day including Saturday and Sunday. In this situation the staff/faculty member works in conjunction with the residents and with the assistance of a network of Teleradiology for our specialists who are on call.
There is encouragement of research, and funds and time are available should a trainee have a project, either one that he is interested in, or one that gathers his interest in collaboration with a faculty member in our department or other departments. My personal philosophy is that I never do anything that is not in the best interests of our residents. Once a trainee is accepted in this institution, there is not only a commitment during this training, but an everlasting relationship with the resident as he enters private or academic practice.
Radiology today is more exciting than ever! With the new developments of technology, the new aspects of training programs and fellowships in subspecialties, I believe that Radiology will be one of the most important aspects of health care delivery now and in the next millennium.
