 Vascular/Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program

The Interventional Radiology Service offers a one-year fellowship that provides clinical experience in all areas of Vascular & Interventional Radiology, as well as didactic teaching and direct supervision of clinical patient management and the procedural, interpretive, and consultative aspects of the subspecialty. All vascular, digestive, and interventional procedures are performed in sufficient volume for the fellow to gain competence. Vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures are taught, including arteriography, venography, angioplasty and related percutaneous revascularization procedures, including stent placements, embolotherapy, transcatheter infusion therapy, intravascular foreign body removal, percutaneous inferior vena cava filter placement, percutaneous and transvascular imaging-guided biopsy, percutaneous gastrostomy, percutaneous nephrostomy, urethral stenting, other transcatheter genitourinary procedures for treatment of lithiasis, obstruction or fistula, percutaneous transhepatic and transcholecystic biliary procedures, percutaneous drainage for diagnosis and treatment of infections and other fluid collections, and imaging-guided ablation of neoplasms.

The program utilizes three major hospitals, the UAMS Medical Center, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. State-of-the-art equipment is available in all hospitals, and there are five procedures rooms with the most modern imaging technologies.

The teaching faculty includes full-time vascular and interventional radiologists, pediatric interventional radiologists, interventional neuroradiologists, a vascular surgeon with specialized training in endovascular techniques. The section is supported by advanced degree nurses and radiology physician’s assistants.

The faculty support scholarship on the part of the fellow, including teaching, research, writing, and participation in national meetings. Although primarily clinical, the fellowship provides ample time for clinical and/or basic investigation.

The fellowship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is approved for 2 fellows per program year. The program participates in the specialty matching services (SMS) and requires applicants other than internal candidates to participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Further information about the SMS can be accessed on the NRMP website at http://www.nrmp.org/fellow/.
