Director - G. Richard Smith, M.D.
Dr. Smith received his
Bachelor of Science degree in chemical biology from Rhodes College in
Memphis. He was a medical student, intern and resident at UAMS. Upon
completion of his fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital (Rochester, NY) in
Psychiatry and Internal Medicine, Dr. Smith returned to UAMS in 1981.
A professor, Marie Wilson Howells chair of the department of psychiatry and distinguished scientist for almost 25 years, Dr.
Smith developed several programs at UAMS, including the Division of Health Services Research (formerly the Centers for Mental Healthcare Research), the nation’s largest research group dedicated to mental
health and substance abuse services research. Dr. Smith was the founding
director of the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement and a leader in securing the state’s
tobacco settlement to improve health care for Arkansans.
Most recently, Dr. Smith has been named Director of the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute, the sixth center of excellence at UAMS.
Program Coordinator - Sarah Peterson, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
Ms. Peterson obtained her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She began working with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2005 as a therapist in PRI’s Programs for Young Adults and has been integral in the development of Arkansas’ first adult eating disorders program. Ms. Peterson serves as a field instructor for the UALR School of Social Work and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She has also served as a media consultant for Arkansas Educational Television Network, most recently on the development of educational materials addressing self-injurious behaviors in the adolescent population. Ms. Peterson has special interests in adolescent treatment, education, and eating disorders.
Psychiatrist - S. Tyler Bayles, M.D.
Dr. Bayles graduated from the University of Arizona, College of Medicine, and completed his post graduate training at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed a residency in adult psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at UAMS. He is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent psychiatry and the American Medical Association. Dr. Bayles is currently an attending physician for the PRI Program for Young Adults and the Medical Director for the STRIVE Program. He has special interests in school based care, adolescent treatment, and eating disorders.
Internist - Allison Johnson, M.D.
Dr. Johnson is a physician and assistant professor in the UAMS Department of Internal Medicine. She completed a residency program in internal medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences She has received numerous awards including AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award/ UAMS Nominee, The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, and the Winston K. Shorey Award. Dr. Johnson serves as a member of the Ethics Faculty and on the UAMS Ethics committee. She is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, and Society of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Johnson’s involvement has been vital to the development of the adult eating disorders program. She also has special interests in primary care for women and medical education.
Internist - Sara Tariq, M.D.
Dr. Tariq is a physician, assistant professor in the UAMS Department of Internal Medicine and Director of Clinical Skills. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Brown University. She has received numerous honors including The George Ackerman Award for Outstanding Faculty in Internal Medicine and the Haffenreffer Fellowship Award for Excellence in Education. She is a member of American College of Physicians, Society of General Internal Medicine, Association of Standardized Patient Educators and Arkansas Medical Society. Dr. Tariq’s contributions have been essential to the development of the eating disorders program. She also has special interests in education and women’s health.
