Endowed Chairs
The endowed professorship
is rich with tradition. It came into being in 16th century England when Lady
Margaret of Richmond, mother of Henry VII, established the Margaret Professorship
of Divinity at Oxford.
Now, five centuries
later, her gift still supports a continuous line of distinguished scholars.
The first American chair was established at Harvard University some 50 years
before the American Revolution.
A special opportunity
is available to the donor of an endowed chair. The donor is able to commemorate
the name of an individual for posterity. Such appointments are held by renowned
medical scientists who are especially chosen for the honor. The endowed chair
acknowledges the person for whom it is named. As an indicator of lasting commitment,
dedication and performance, it characterizes those values, which attend true
distinction in medical science and practice.
The endowed chair is
a tribute of the highest order to the holder, the donor and to those for whom
it is named. It is a unique means of sustaining special academic distinction
for current and future generations.
