The Adult Psychiatry Clinic is a division of the UAMS Medical Center Psychiatry Service and functions as an area-wide psychotherapy and psychopharmacological referral center. Residents are able to conduct long- and short-term treatment using all psychotherapeutic modalities.
Part of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), this 510-bed general hospital, adjacent to the UAMS campus, is a referral center for six states. The hospital includes inpatient units for medicine, neurology, surgery, orthopedics, NET, and neurosurgery, plus intensive care units for surgery, medicine, and cardiology.
Built on the historic grounds of Fort Roots, the North Little Rock VA Hospital, also part of CAVHS, was constructed in 1982. The psychiatry service serves as a referral center for a six-state region, providing excellent training cases.
The hospital contains units designated for acute general psychiatry, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, chemical dependency, chronic psychiatry, and rehabilitation. The North Little Rock VA also contains a comprehensive, specialized, multi-disciplinary, mental health clinic. This is the farthest teaching site, located 15 minutes away from the UAMS Campus.

The hospital has a full complement of subspecialty services on an inpatient basis, such as consult services, and in outpatient departments. Major endowments have produced a modern, first-rate facility, which is also the nation’s sixth largest pediatric hospital.
The outpatient psychiatry clinic offers all treatment modalities to children, adolescents, and families with subspecialty clinics for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorder, and learning disabilities.
Arkansas Children’s Hospital is located approximately three miles from the UAMS campus.
GAIN Program (Greater Assistance For Those In Need)
This innovative, assertive community treatment program for the seriously mentally ill is attracting nationwide attention. PGY III residents spend 40% of their time for six months as part of a team that addresses each patient’s care needs on an individualized biopsychosocial plan. This pilot project began in 1990 and is a nationally recognized model for the effective integration of the seriously mentally ill patient into the community. The program is decreasing inpatient care days and increasing participation by the patient in his/her care plan.
This 204-bed hospital is adjacent to the UAMS campus and serves as a statewide referral center. This modern facility has been awarded the First Gulf States Regional Honor Award in Architecture. Residents are taught on a special resident training unit staffed with some of our program’s most popular attending physicians. There is also a statewide forensic evaluation and treatment center (60-bed) that provides well-supervised and supported forensic experience for residents.
