Meet the Residents

Brian T. Hyatt, MD
Graduate
Hometown: Huntington Beach, California

I interviewed at, among other institutions, The University of California Irvine, The University of Southern California, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Medical University of South Carolina. In the end, my decision wasn’t even close. The educational opportunities afforded by UAMS are, in my opinion, unrivaled. The emphasis here is on teaching and is evidenced by our superb didactics, individualized supervision and mock oral boards/mock PRITEs. In fact, last year my group, after completing our mock PRITE examinations, scored in the 98th percentile nationally.

One particular advantage UAMS offers is access to a very diverse patient population. Patients are cared for in multiple settings, from Arkansas’ only state hospital (on-site) to a private practice setting with everything in between including the university setting and our assertive community treatment program. Residents at UAMS also have the opportunity to work with our geriatrics program as well as our children’s program (voted in the top 10 and top 25 respectively by US News and World Report). We have numerous excellent fellowships available, including Forensics, Geriatrics, Research, Child, and Substance abuse, and with the completion of the newly constructed Psychiatric Research Institute, we will arguably have the nicest facilities in the nation. At UAMS, psychiatry is well respected. Last year UAMS ranked 3rd in the nation in percentage of senior medical students choosing psychiatry as a career. Moreover, within UAMS, our clerkship ranks first in junior medical student board exam scores.

We have one of the best call schedules in the nation. Intern call is on the order of 35 calls per year and decreases markedly yearly (4th year there are no call requirements). Moreover, we are, amazingly enough, paid to take call within our program…even as an intern. I believe our lifestyle here in Little Rock is unmatched. Stipends are generous and most residents own their own homes.

In addition, I would be hard-pressed to recall a week that I worked much over 40 hours. UAMS has afforded my wife and I a fantastic quality of life. We take a weekend getaway at least once a month to some of the state’s beautiful national parks/lakes. Hot Springs National Park and Eureka Springs are no more than a stone’s throw from Little Rock and the climate couldn’t be better. I suppose that sounds funny coming from a Southern California resident, but there is a notable change of seasons here: Lake weather in the summer, snow in the winter, and the fall color rivals the northeast.

If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t have interviewed anywhere else. Little Rock offers a superlative yet practical psychiatric education in the context of an unbeatable lifestyle complimented by numerous fellowship opportunities.
