Welcome!

Founded in 1951, the Department of Psychiatry in the UAMS College of Medicine, in Little Rock, Arkansas, is structured around three main components: research, education, and clinical care. We are a relatively large department with more than 350 employees, including 98 full-time faculty members (65 MDs and 33 PhDs). The department provides care for approximately 1,200 patients per day in 12 sites around Central Arkansas.

The department came to national prominence in the 1960s when John Peters, MD, and Sam Clements, PhD, significantly altered the psychiatric approach to treating children. Their landmark work in what became known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) led to breakthrough medical and pharmaceutical treatments for children that helped alleviate their hyperactivity as well as behavioral and learning difficulties.

UAMS Psychiatry has become one of the major psychiatric research and training centers in the south. Our psychiatric residency program is recognized as one of the largest and strongest in the region. More than 80% of Arkansas' psychiatrists received their training at UAMS, with many achieving impressive high scores on their national board exams.

Our Division of Health Services Research is recognized as one of the most innovative research facilities in America. The expertise of DHSR's researchers is in examining factors that influence the effectiveness of patient services. Faculty members are Principal Investigators on active grants totaling more than $43 million in direct costs.

Our community outreach efforts work with the Department of Human Services and other state, city and neighborhood organizations to provide critically needed community-based services, pharmaceutical evaluations, program development, and educational resources.
