    AWARDS

    The following funding awards are available to graduate students, clinicians, researchers, and post doctoral fellows respectively. Each granting institution/foundation listed has specific requirements for submission. For more information, follow the included links.

    Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research

    • Fulbright Scholar Program – to promote mutual understanding and benefit through contributions to host countries and US home institutions; award funding related to location; application deadlines dependent on specific program May 1 – January 1; http://www.cies.org/us_scholars

    • Arthritis Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship - to encourage qualified physicians/scientists to embark on careers in research related to the understanding of arthritis and the rheumatic diseases; provides stipend support for the early years of the necessary training period; Applications that are dedicated to an arthritis project and career or that will stimulate real interchange across disciplines leading to advances in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis; September 1 is the deadline for receipt of all applications. Complete applications must be received by the Research Department of the Arthritis Foundation by the deadline date; the stipend level will be $35,000 per year with $500.00 to the institution for supplies, travel, etc.; http://www.arthritis.org/research/

    • Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associate Awards - for conducting research at a specific laboratory chosen by the applicant; made to doctoral level scientists and engineers who apply their special knowledge and research talents to research areas that are of interest to them and to the host laboratories and centers; made to Graduate Students (within 5 years of doctorate) and Postdocs (5 yrs+ after doctorate); February 1, May 1, August 1, November 1 annually; funded by the National Academies; $40,000/yr+ depending on host research center/institute; http://www.nationalacademies.org

    • Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships - awards to postdocs (in the areas of archaeology, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, engineering, geography, life sciences, mathematics, physics) of superior academic achievement, commitment to teaching and research at the university level and who will use diversity to enrich student education; awards $40,000/year; application deadline December 15 annually; http://www7.nationalacademies.org/fellowships/

    • Hertz Foundation's Graduate Fellowship - award based on merit (not need) consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend; cost-of-education allowance accepted by all tenable schools in lieu of all fees and tuition; applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States; Option 1 ($28,000/9-month personal stipend; full tuition; renewable to 5 years); Option 2 ($33,000/9-month stipend; full tuition; renewable to 2 years); application deadline is August - October annually; http://www.hertzfoundation.org

    • EPA Science To Achieve Results - (STAR) and GRO Fellowships For Graduate Environmental Study - Master's level students receive support for a maximum of 2 years; doctoral students may be supported for 3 years maximum with funding available, under certain circumstances, over a period of four years.     • USDA National Awards Program for Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences - offered annually to honor teaching excellence in national (two $5,000), regional (six $2,000), and new teacher (four $2,000) categories; teaching of production, processing, marketing, distribution, conservation, consumption, research, and development of food and agriculturally related products and services, inclusive of academic programs in agriculture, natural resources, forestry, veterinary medicine, human sciences/family and consumer sciences, and related fields; application deadline March 15 annually; http://www.csrees.usda.gov/business/other_links/serdteachaward.html#section1

    • + Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program - awards 4-year grants to research-active undergraduate faculty; intended to empower leading scientists at doctoral and research universities to work more closely with undergraduates at their home institutions; Institutions must be invited by HHMI to nominate faculty members to compete for the HHMI professors awards; nomination deadlines vary; http://www.hhmi.org/grants/

    Research Specific

    • George J. Schroepfer Medal – for research in the steroid or sterol field; Nomination deadline = October 15; AOCS – American Oil Chemists Society; presented every 2 years https://www.aocs.org/member/awards/

    • Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation - Beckman Young Investigator (BYI) Program provides research support to promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences; Funded for 3 years ~ $264,000 over the term of the project; Application deadline is October 1, annually, http://www.beckman-foundation.com/byiguide2.html

    • Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) Young Investigators Award - has six main areas of research: tumor-specific replicating viruses and bacteria; anti-angiogenesis; immune-mediated gene therapy and cancer vaccines; oncogenes/suppressor oncogenes/apoptosis; tumor targeting and vector development; and other cancer gene therapy research; maximum of $500,000 distributed over 3 years, inclusive of 10% indirect costs; funds may be used for salary, technical assistance, supplies, animals or capital equipment; application deadline September 13, 2006; http://www.acgtfoundation.org/research.html#investigate


    • Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) INVESTIGATORS AWARD for Gene Therapy for Lymphoma and Leukemia - to advance gene therapy into the causes, treatment and prevention of lymphoma and leukemia by promoting basic and pre-clinical research approaches utilizing cells and genes as medicine, as well as clinical translational studies; provides up to a maximum of $1 million distributed over 3-5 years, inclusive of 10% indirect costs; same areas of research as Young Investigators Award; application deadline March annually; http://www.acgtfoundation.org

    • Burroughs Welcome Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research - provides $750,000 over a period of five years ($150,000 per year). BWF will make up to nine awards for the 2007 award series; to foster development and productivity of established physician-scientists who will strengthen translational research through their own studies and mentor physician-scientist trainees; intended to give recipients freedom and flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions, apply the resulting knowledge at the bedside, and bring clinical insights back to the laboratory for further exploration; http://www.bwfund.org/programs/translational/clinical_scientists_background.html

    • Burroughs Welcome Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) - provides $700,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service; Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease; Postdoctoral awards are a minimum of one and a maximum of two years; allows awardees to use up to $190,000 or $95,000 of the award per year; allows maximum salary support of $65,000 per year; If awardees move to faculty positions within two years, the balance of the postdoctoral/fellowship award will be transferred to the faculty institution and added to the faculty portion of the award; http://www.bwfund.org/programs/CAMS/cams_background.html

    • Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowships - to provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars who are setting up laboratories and establishing independent research projects in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, relevant interdisciplinary field; Application deadline September 15 annually; $45,000/2 year period; http://www.sloan.org/programs/

    • + Searle Scholars Program - for early-career research scientists in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences; awards of $80,000/year for 3 years (2nd and 3rd year contingent on acceptable progress reports); applications submitted by the institution, not individual candidates; applications deadline September 29, 2006; annually; http://www.searlescholars.net/apply/eligibility.html

    • Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Award – to initiate independent research of new pre-tenured faculty; $50,000 award; nomination deadline May 10, 2007
