Ph.D. Program Requirements
Students
seeking a Ph.D. degree may choose between three tracks: Physiology and
Biophysics, Pathophysiology, or Physiology and Biophysics with emphasis
in Neuroscience. Students must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours
of coursework, pass an oral qualifying examination, complete a doctoral
dissertation based on original laboratory work, and defend the
dissertation. Course requirements for each track are described below.
Students are responsible for meeting the requirements of the Department
of Physiology and Biophysics for the Ph.D. degree and all other
University requirements and deadlines.

Neuroscience elective courses must be taken from a list of approved
neuroscience courses. Selected courses must be approved by the Graduate
Committee in consultation with the students's academic advisor.

With the exception of their final semester, students are expected to
enroll in Seminar (either PHYO 5051 or PATH 5041) while in residence. A
total of 4 hours count towards satisfying course requirements.

Students are required to enroll in a non-credit ethics course that is
held during the first month of the Fall Semester.

Elective courses taken by students must be approved by the Graduate
Committee in consultation with the student's academic advisor.
