Our laboratory is interested in understanding synaptic,
cellular, and network mechanisms of neuronal interactions in the mammalian
retina as they relate to visual system development and visual signal
integration. Our current research focuses on (1) cellular and network
mechanisms underlying spontaneous, rhythmic waves of excitation in the
developing retina, (2) mechanisms of synaptic and dendritic integration in
identified retinal neurons during visual processing, (3) retinal development
and function in transgenic mice. Experimental techniques currently used in
the lab include: patch-clamp recordings from paired neurons in the intact
mammalian retina and retinal slices, simultaneous patch clamp and calcium
imaging in the retina, flash photolysis, biolistic gene transfection and
fluorescence labeling, and computational modeling.
