Pharmaceutical Sciences involves a variety of aspects in the continuum from drug discovery, to design, analysis, development, production, quality control, safety, clinical evaluation, regulation, distribution and the utilization of drugs and drug delivery systems for therapeutic benefits.
The Pharmaceutical Sciences Track was established as a collaborative effort between the Departments of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The track functions as a part of the graduate program of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology.
All requirements for the current Ph.D. program in Pharmacology apply to the Pharmaceutical Sciences Track. There is some modification of the required courses that to accommodate courses in Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry. Course requirements for the Track have been designed to provide students a broad and well-coordinated experience in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Because of the unique nature of this Track, existing graduate courses offered by several basic science departments at UAMS are included (i.e. physiology, biochemistry, and biometry). This provides an interdisciplinary approach, increases faculty interactions, and adds dimension and diversity to the program. The Track brings together scientists with expertise in various aspects of the discovery, design, analysis, development, production, quality control, safety, clinical evaluation, regulation, distribution and utilization of drugs and drug delivery systems. The Track provides graduate students a broad resource of interrelated research and instructional experience concentrated in the Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The future prospects for graduates of this program track are good to excellent.
The Final Report of the Commission on the Future of Graduate Education in the
Pharmaceutical Sciences indicates that there is no apparent need to constrain
future enrollment in the pharmaceutical sciences. This is due largely to the
bright future for such graduates in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
