University Hospital:
The University Hospital of Arkansas, opened in 1955, is the central teaching facility for residencies in 25 specialties, including Internal Medicine. A significant fraction of this 400-bed facility has been renovated. The new Ward tower opened in 1997 with a new ICU, Labor and Delivery Unit, and Surgical Suites. The nurseries at University Hospital consist of a 32 bed NICU and a 20 bed Intermediate care nursery.
Arkansas Children's Hospital
Arkansas Children’s Hospital is a private, not for profit, free standing children’s hospital with 280 beds. Established in 1910, the hospital underwent rapid growth in the 1980’s and is now one of the ten largest children’s hospitals in the nation. The hospital serves as the major pediatric teaching affiliate for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
The hospital is the only pediatric hospital in the state of Arkansas, and serves as a referral center for areas of southern Missouri, eastern Oklahoma, northern Louisiana and northeast Texas. Nationally renowned programs such as the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program and the ECMO program attract patients from other areas of the country as well.
The hospital has recent expansions in the past few years of a 26-bed PICU, 70 bed NICU, a 12 bed cardiovascular intensive care unit, surgical suites, and expanded lobby and admissions areas. Future expansion plans include new outpatient clinics, larger inpatient ward space, emergency care space, and neonatal ICU space.
The hospital also operates a neonatal and pediatric transport service which uses two helicopters, three vans, and has a variety of fixed-winged aircraft available. All pediatric transports include a resident physician or fellow, transport nurse and respiratory therapist. Residents are able to participate in the transport program after completing the pediatric ICU rotation.
