CALL ROOMS |
Call rooms are
provided for residents on call. |

EDUCATION FOR FAMILY MEMBERS |
A resident’s
spouse and dependent children receive a forty percent tuition discount
for undergraduate training at the University of Arkansas. |
|
EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES |
Pediatric Grand
Rounds and core curriculum conferences are held weekly; in-patient
morning report is held four days a week; research conferences,
complicated case and pediatric seminars are held at least monthly.
Intern lecture seminars are held daily during July and August. Interns
receive two weeks of training prior to beginning their first rotation in
July. |

EDUCATIONAL FUND |
$400 is provided
annually (contingent upon satisfactory conference attendance and
medical record completion) to purchase books and journals or to use
to attend a medical conference. Supplemental funding is provided for
residents presenting at academic meetings. |
|
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM |
The Arkansas
Employee Assistance Program provides counseling, information, and
management consultation for residents and/or family members who
experience personal distress. |
|
FITNESS CENTER |
All UAMS
Pediatric residents are provided membership to the ACH fitness center
compliments of ACH. Membership to the fitness center at UAMS is
available at a special resident rate. |
|
INSURANCE |
A managed
healthcare plan as well as life, disability, claims made and "tail end"
liability insurance is provided for each resident. Dental insurance, in
addition to spouse and dependent children medical coverage, is available
at an additional charge but is subsidized. |
|
MEALS |
Meal cards are
provided for residents use at ACH. Ninety dollars per month is placed on
the card which may be used in the cafeteria or vending machines.
Meals are
furnished on a per call basis while at UAMS. |
|
MEETINGS & CONFERENCES |
Residents may
attend one major or two minor meetings during each year of training.
(Attendance at meetings is not considered vacation time.) Travel
expenses may be reimbursed through the resident's educational fund. |
|
MEMBERSHIP DUES |
The Department of
Pediatrics pays membership dues for residents in the American Academy of
Pediatrics. All residents receive the Pediatric Review and Education
Program from the American Academy of Pediatrics. |
|
MISCELLANEOUS |
Library access,
photocopy access, computer services, secretarial support and pagers are
provided free of charge. |
|
PARENTAL LEAVE / SICK LEAVE |
Residents can
take up to twelve weeks of leave, paid or unpaid, during any twelve
month period for family medical problems which include: the birth or
adoption of a child, or placement of a child for foster care; a serious
health condition that prevents the resident from performing essential
job functions; or a serious health condition affecting the resident's
spouse, child or parent and for whom they are needed to provide care. A
housestaff member must discuss the leave with the program director and
understand how the leave will affect his/her residency program and
eligibility to take the Board Exams. |

PARKING |
All residents are
granted parking privileges at Arkansas Children's Hospital and in the
gate-controlled parking lots for resident physicians at the University
Hospital. |
|
PAY SCHEDULE |
Residents are
paid monthly by direct deposit on the last working day of the month.
For 2007-08, our interns earn $43,000. PGY-2 residents earn $44,000
and PGY-3 residents earn $45,500. |
|
RETREATS / CERTIFICATION |
A PGY-1 retreat
is held each year for residents and their families. During the second
year, Career Day is held in the fall with periodic opportunities for
additional time-sensitive learning activities.
All PGY-1s are
certified in PALS and NALS; all residents are certified in APLS by their
third year. |
|
SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES |
Program
affiliated and approved supplemental activity opportunities that are
available to PGY-2s, -3s, and -4s include serving as Transport
Physicians on Pediatric Helicopter transport and providing Sports
Medicine coverage for local sports teams. All residents may participate
in sports physicals. Other outside work activities must be approved by
the Program Director. |

UNIFORMS |
Five white lab
coats are provided for residents. |
|
VACATION |
Three weeks of
paid vacation are provided annually plus four to five days off during
the Christmas or New Year's holiday. |
