Residency Program

Pediatric training at its best

Choosing the best situation for a pediatric residency program is no easy matter, but ask the men and women who have come to train here and they'll tell you that the environment provided by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) is among the best.

By combining the state’s only pediatric residency program with the nation’s sixth largest children’s hospital, these two institutions have long served to set the standards for pediatric care in Arkansas. Another is that the partnership between them creates a superb setting for learning and provides the best possible health care to children.

The UAMS Pediatric Training Program at Arkansas Children's Hospital is a fully accredited pediatric training program, with the training of Pediatric and Medicine/Pediatric residents considered a top priority of the department and hospital's faculty and staff. The program provides a well-balanced general pediatric experience and will prepare you for either a career in a primary care pediatric practice or for further training in a pediatric subspecialty.

A three-year pediatric residency and four-year combined pediatric and internal medicine residency are offered in accordance with the American Board of Pediatrics and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. The curriculum for each program is well coordinated for a balance of inpatient and outpatient training.

As an intern, you will find ample interaction with and supervision by upper level residents and faculty, while as an upper level resident you will experience increased exposure to various pediatric subspecialties as well as take on expanded teaching and supervisory roles. Sufficient elective time allows second- and third-year residents to explore areas of special interest.

The Resident Continuity Clinic plays an integral role in the pediatric training program at UAMS and Arkansas Children's Hospital. Each resident is assigned one-half day each week to serve as the primary health care provider for a selected group of patients. Routine well child care is provided for these children as well as management of their acute and chronic illnesses. General Pediatric faculty are always available to assist you in the management of your patients.

Other community experiences exist to round out your total general pediatric training. Primary Care electives early in your training allow for you to spend time in private practices, school clinics or community based clinics in the city and state. These experiences allow you further education in innovative health care delivery.

Our faculty contribute greatly to the broad general pediatric education at UAMS and ACH. Our Emergency Department and Intensive Care Nursery are attended 24 hours a day by in-house faculty. Other faculty members are accessible around the clock for consultation on specific patient problems.

Since Arkansas Children's Hospital serves as the pediatric education facility for numerous other specialties — surgery, cardiovascular surgery, urology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and radiology, for instance — you are given ample opportunity to interact with residents and fellows training in other fields of medicine. This allows you to develop your expertise in pediatric collaboration and consultation.

Our residents also enjoy working with an excellent support staff of well-trained nurses, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, child life and education specialists and information services workers.
