Child Neurology Fellowship
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Arkansas Children’s Hospital
General
Description
The University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s Hospital offers an
ACGME accredited fellowship in Child Neurology. It is the intent of the
Child Neurology training program to develop physicians well trained and able
to practice in a competent and independent fashion as neurologists with
special competence in child neurology. This training is achieved through a)
supervised clinical work with increasing responsibility for outpatients and
inpatients and b) a foundation of organized instruction in basic
neurosciences. Physicians completing the program will be eligible for
certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with an
ultimate goal of an eventual 100% pass rate on this examination.
The three-year
training program is divided between UAMS, VAH and ACH. The first year of
child neurology entails learning adult neurology at UAMS and the VAH in
clinical, consultation and ward services. The remaining two years are
divided between clinical child neurology and specialty areas at ACH, such as
neurophysiology and neuropathology among others.
The Place
The Division of
Pediatric Neurology is located at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH), a 280
bed quaternary care facility that is the only pediatric medical center in
the state of Arkansas, and which serves as a referral center for areas of
southern Missouri, eastern Oklahoma, northern Louisiana and northeast Texas.
The hospital is the major pediatric teaching affiliate for the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
The University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the state’s only academic medical center
and is responsible for training more than 80 percent of the physicians in
Arkansas as well as the majority of other medical professionals in the
state.
The Services
The staff of the
Division of Pediatric Neurology provides inpatient and consultation services
throughout the busy free-standing children’s hospital, including large and
active PICU, CVICU and NICU facilities. A four-bed inpatient video EEG
monitoring unit along with long-term bedside EEG and numerous routine EEG’s
allows ample opportunity for learning electroencephalography. Additionally,
clinical opportunities include busy brain tumor and muscular dystrophy
clinics. Other clinical services are uniformly strong and supportive,
providing a rich and challenging learning environment. Research
opportunities include clinical research as well as the chance to interface
with basic scientists at UAMS or in ACH labs.
The People
The Division of
Pediatric Neurology consists of seven faculty members, who actively
participate in patient care as well as clinical or basic research: Drs. John
Bornhofen, Bassem El-Nabbout, May Griebel, Cristian
Ionita, Bernadette Lange, Gregory Sharp and Rolla Shbarou (Program Director). Other personnel
within the division include two APNs and five neurology specialty nurses.
